J Sports Pickleball: 2nd Annual Women's Doubles Showdown Pickleball Tournament
Program Description: Join the JCC for the first Women’s Doubles Showdown Pickleball Tournament on Sunday, November 19th.
This tournament will be Women’s Doubles Only, bracketed first by age, then skill. All brackets will include a random pool Round Robin, followed by Medaled Bracket Play. The top 2 or 4 players from each pool will advance to the bracket round.
Cost is per player and you must have a partner. Each team will be guaranteed at least 3 games.
Skill levels may be combined if age brackets do not have enough teams.
When: Sunday, May 5, 2024, from 1:00-5:00 pm

Program Description: The Liar by Ayelet Gundar-Goshen

Program Description: Prof. David Katz “Commemorating Loss and Celebrating Independence Post Oct.7”
Israel is a nation in which loss and independence are inherently intertwined, as evidenced by the establishment on consecutive days of Yom HaZikron and Yom Haatzmaut, national Memorial Day and Independence Day. The connection between mourning our loss and celebrating our freedom is especially complicated and difficult now in the wake of the horrific Oct. 7 attacks.
David Katz, professor at the University of Haifa in the Dept. of Geography and Environmental Studies, specializes in political geography and environmental policy. His projects involving trans-boundary water management have had positive impacts on Israeli-Palestinian-Jordanian relations. Currently David is an Israel Institute visiting scholar at Duke University’s Nicholas School of Environment.

J Sports Fitness: Beginner Tai Chi Summer Session
Program Description: For Arthritis and Fall Prevention
Originating as a martial art in ancient China, Tai Chi is one of the most effective exercises for health of mind and body. Although an art with great depth of knowledge and skill, it can be easy to learn, and participants will soon notice its health benefits. For many, it continues as a lifetime journey.
Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention is based on the Sun style of Tai Chi. This is the newest of the tai chi styles. The beginning form that will be taught has 21 movements. It is symmetrical and is performed in a standing position which may be modified to a seated position. The form has fluid movements, integrating mind and body.
Benefits to practicing Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention
Relieves pain and decreases stiffness
Improves balance and reduces falls
Builds muscular strength and stamina
Improves ability to perform daily tasks
Improves concentration and memory
Instructor: Sharon Mills has experience as a physical therapist and as an exercise instructor. She is certified by the Tai Chi for Health Institute to teach Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention. Sharon has been teaching Tai Chi in Raleigh for 10 years.

Program Description: Prof. Dan Ariely, Duke University "Understanding the World of Misinformation and Misbeliefs"
One can look at misinformation and misbeliefs as simply mistakes, but in reality they are psychological responses to feelings of deprivation. In his presentation Dan analyzes conditions leading people to lose faith in logical views of the world and begin looking for alternative views, which only result in further levels of misbelief. How can people return to the reality of facts? There are some things we can do to mitigate the damage.
Dan Ariely, professor of Psychology & Behavioral Economics at Duke University, is dedicated to helping people live more sensible – if not rational – lives. He is a founding member of the Center for Advanced Hindsight and co-creator of the documentary film “(Dis)Honesty: The Truth About Lies.” Dr Ariely is a three-time New York Times bestselling author; his books include Predictably Irrational; The Honest Truth About Dishonesty; Irrationally Yours and his latest book, Misbelief, published in 2023.

PJ Bagel Brunch
Program Description: Join us for a pre-Passover celebration at the PJ Bagel Brunch! We will enjoy a meal full of bagels and chametz one last time before Passover starts the following evening. There will be Passover themed crafts and activities available for the little ones. Additionally, a PJ Library Passover story will be read at 11:00.

The day after the fighting ends, then what? Ultimately the problem confronting the Israelis and Palestinians alike will remain the same–two peoples figuring out how to live, either together or apart, on a very small strip of land.
Bob Moog, professor emeritus at NCSU in the School of Public & International Affairs, is a specialist in middle east politics and in comparative legal systems. He has served as political consultant to Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Egypt.

Program Description: People Love Dead Jews by Dara Horn
People Love Dead Jews: Reports from a Haunted Present is an intentionally provocative title, challenging us to confront reasons why there might be so much fascination with Jewish deaths, yet so little respect for Jewish lives as they unfold in the present.
Horn's twelve essays include among others, international veneration of Anne Frank, and “Auschwitz” a blockbuster traveling exhibit. Program Description: Join us for lunch with our special guest, Mark Werner
Mark Werner is a retired attorney in Raleigh, North Carolina. A graduate of Haverford College and the University of Pennsylvania Law School, he served as Chief Legal Officer of GlaxoSmithKline (North America) prior to his retirement. Mark has volunteered on Israeli military bases for each of the past 20 years with no plans to stop. He is the author of a previous book describing his first four volunteer experiences, Army Fatigues: Joining Israel’s Army of International Volunteers. He also edited his father’s Holocaust memoir, Fighting Back: A Memoir of Jewish Resistance in World War II by Harold Werner. Mark is the immediate past President of Volunteers for Israel, the organization that enables him and other Americans to serve as civilian volunteers on Israeli military bases. Mark will speak about his latest book, A Passion For Israel: Adventures of a Sar-el Volunteer, which describes his adventures on his most recent 14 volunteer experiences on IDF bases.

J Sports Spring Pickleball: 4-Player Team Pickleball
Program Description: Spring Pickleball at the JCC is at the Sports Pavilion on the David R. Kahn Community Campus. We are happy to offer 4-player Team Pickleball on Wednesday Nights (Below 3.0 and 3.0-3.5)
Single Players may sign up individually. After the registration period ends, all single players will be allowed to meet and choose a partner from the singles list! If there are not enough single players for a meeting, players will be assigned to play with each other.
We want to make sure that everyone has a fun and competitive season! Teams that are new to the league should plan to attend a ratings assessment. JCC coaches will be on hand to make recommendations and verify that players are registered at the correct level.
There is a $25 multi-league discount for JCC Members. Discount is per player, Members only and is only available when the player is registering for 3 or more leagues and must be used during the Members only registration window; December 26-January 14. In order to obtain the discount, the player must call the office to register. You can speak to Carla or Brad to register.

J Soccer: Preschool Punters Soccer Clinic, Presented by Wake FC
Program Description: J Sports Soccer: Preschool Punters Presented by Wake FC
J Sports is happy to host our Preschool Punters Soccer Clinics in Spring 2024, a multi-week recreational clinic. Each clinic will play on Sunday mornings for 30 minutes.
This league will serve as a recreational skill-building league for Pre-K participants, aged 2-5 that will provide skills development, which enhances the basics of soccer, including drills in passing, dribbling, and shooting and adds a competitive aspect.
Each week, players will work on enhancing different skills while building on the previous weeks. The clinics will focus on drills and skill building after which players. The goal of the clinic is to ensure each player can accurately complete and be confident in their skills by the end of the session.
Sessions will be presented by coaches from Wake FC, a local Futbol Club based in Holly Springs. “Wake FC takes great responsibility as a leader in North Carolina soccer by providing quality coaching and training in a positive and safe environment for all ages and levels of players.”

Shabbat Across Greater Raleigh
Program Description: Join us for a meaningful and relaxed celebration of Shabbat on March 8th in the way that best suits you! Shabbat Across Greater Raleigh is a call to families to come together with others and honor Shabbat in their own style. From traditional dinners to celebrating it in your own style from a pizza dinner, picnic, or even a dinner in a restaurant.
Last year, more than 200 people from 75 households participated, and this year we are aiming to increase those numbers by offering three ways to join in; you will need to choose one of the ticket levels below and click the link to register:
Option 1: As a HOST we will provide you with a Shabbat Guide. You invite your own friends and family to celebrate in your home.
Option 2: As a HOST we will provide you with a Shabbat Guide. Besides your own friends and family, you would be willing to host people in community looking for a home to celebrate Shabbat that have contacted the JCC. Please let us know the number of people we can send you to host.
Option 3: As a GUEST we will connect you to a host that has signed up invite people looking for a home for Shabbat dinner. Please let us know the number of people in your family that will be going to a home.

Originating as a martial art in ancient China, Tai Chi is one of the most effective exercises for health of mind and body. Although an art with great depth of knowledge and skill, it can be easy to learn, and participants will soon notice its health benefits. For many, it continues as a lifetime journey.
Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention is based on the Sun style of Tai Chi. This is the newest of the tai chi styles. The beginning form that will be taught has 21 movements. It is symmetrical and is performed in a standing position which may be modified to a seated position. The form has fluid movements, integrating mind and body.
Benefits to practicing Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention
Relieves pain and decreases stiffness
Improves balance and reduces falls
Builds muscular strength and stamina
Improves ability to perform daily tasks
Improves concentration and memory
Instructor: Sharon Mills has experience as a physical therapist and as an exercise instructor. She is certified by the Tai Chi for Health Institute to teach Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention. Sharon has been teaching Tai Chi in Raleigh for 10 years.

Western Wake Speaker Lunch: "Hotel Cuba" with Aaron Hamburger
Description: Come journey back into time, to Havana, Cuba of the 1920s with author Aaron Hamburger, whose new book Hotel Cuba describes a little known chapter in Jewish immigration history.
Inspired by the true story of Hamburger's grandmother, the book brings to light the story of Jewish refugees from World War I and the Soviet Revolution who wanted to come to America but found the gates to Ellis Island closed to them as a result of new immigration laws passed in 1921 and then 1924. Instead, they headed to other New World destinations, including Havana, Cuba, which was also a haven for smugglers, draft dodgers, and tourists from America engaging in alcohol tourism because of Prohibition. Hamburger explores the various Jewish communities living in Cuba at the time, both Ashkenazi and Sephardic, as well as the efforts local Jews made to welcome this unexpected influx of newcomers, who nicknamed their new home "Hotel Cuba," seeing it as a temporary waystation en route to the Golden Land of the U.S. However, for many, Cuba was not just a waystation, but a new home in itself.
Hotel Cuba was named a best book of 2023 by Hadassah Magazine. It was also the Jewish Book Council’s January Book Club pick.
Hotel Cuba will be available for purchase. All book sale proceeds will be donated to the Jewish Federation of Greater Raleigh.

Instructor: Sharon Mills has experience as a physical therapist and as an exercise instructor. She is certified by the Tai Chi for Health Institute to teach Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention. Sharon has been teaching Tai Chi in Raleigh for 10 years.
Clothing: Please wear loose, comfortable clothes and shoes that are suitable for exercise.

Program Description: Once We Were Home by Jennifer Rosner
Once We Were Home is based on the true stories of Jewish children whose parents had given them to Christians in order to save them from the Nazis. This historical novel provides insight into post-WWII long term consequences faced by the children and their families. For example some adoptive parents don't want to relinquish the children back to their biological parents. This heart-wrenching novel raises questions of identity, parenthood, belonging, and morality — as it confronts what it really means to find home.

J Sports Softball: Adult Co-Ed Softball League
Program Description: Join the Jewish Community Center of Greater Raleigh with our 2nd season of our JCC Adult Softball League. With three teams last season, we look to expand and have a fourth team introduced into the league. Join us on Sunday mornings this spring!
Each team will play eight regular season games followed by a season ending championship tournament. League dates include March 3, 10, 17, April 7, 14, 21, 28, May 5, 19 and June 2. March 3 will be a new player assessment for any new players looking to join a team that did not play last season and March 10 will be a designated practice day for each team. Games begin on March 17 with the season ending tournament on June 9. This league will serve as a competitive co-ed league for adults ages 18+.
Returning players will have the option of returning to their previous team or entering the “transfer portal” to be drafted by another team. All new players will be placed into the draft pool and will be selected by teams needing players. There is a max of 15 players per team.
The league will play on Sunday Mornings at Lions Park or Carolina Pines. Game times are at 9:30am & 10:30am. An official schedule will be sent out by March 10.

Program Description: Volunteer Information Sessions are a wonderful way to learn more about the Jewish Federation of Greater Raleigh Volunteer Impact Program.
At these sessions attendees will have an opportunity to understand the requirements and commitment as a volunteer, meet the Volunteer Engagement Manager, and learn more about The Jewish Federation of Greater Raleigh and what we do for our growing community.
