ISRAEL & OVERSEAS

On Sunday May 23, our Greater Raleigh Jewish community came together for a virtual gathering after 2 weeks of fighting and tension in Israel. We heard reflections from community members in Raleigh and in the region, and local rabbis joined us in prayers for mourning, healing, Israel, and peace. The event really brought the community together during a turbulent time. Click below to watch the recording.

The Ganei Alon Community Center serves mainly Ethiopian immigrants. Over the years, the Jewish Federations of Raleigh-Cary and Durham-Chapel Hill have contributed a computer room, renovated and equipped the children's club, and the youth club, purchased board games and books, sports products, and digital equipment. We have also contributed to the establishment of a sports field near the community center. The field is accessible to the residents around the neighborhood and its surroundings. The field is also used for various gatherings and community events.

The task force was established for smaller Jewish communities through Jewish Federation of North America to connect with cities in Israel. This task force helps support the Ethiopian community of Ganei Alon (“gardens of oak trees”) in our sister city, Hadera. Over the years, collectively, the task force has raised about $15,000 each year, building community gardens, after school facilities, computer labs, and much more. The community is deeply grateful for our continued support; anytime we have folks from our community visit, they are welcomed into Ganei Alon as family and given an extensive tour to see firsthand the impact we are making on their neighborhood.

In 2019 we had the opportunity to once again create something very special for the residents of Ganei Alon, as the community raised the funds to build a music room. This space is now where the children and youth can play, sing, and record. The music room includes computers, music production software, monitors, stands and screens for the monitors, desks for the computers, sound cards with effect processor, an analogical volume controller, wiring, microphones, a controller, and acoustics. Members of the task force have visited the community center since the newest project has been completed and it is truly a wonderful addition and is being used by all.

Creating a Space for a Tutoring Room

Over the years, the number of our participants in the community center activities have increased. Many children and youth have expressed academic difficulties in school. Their parents are not able to fund private tutoring to their children. In order to establish a learning a learning center for the children and the youth, we need to use one of our rooms that is currently used as a storage room. In order to do so, we need to buy a storage structure that will be located in the center’s yard over cement casting. Your generous donation will enable us to purchase the storage structure and make all necessary adjustments so we will be able to clear the room and make it the Ganei Alon Community Learning Center.
