Mary Ann Freedman presents "Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean: Conversos of the Inquisition."
Lunch Provider: TBD
In 1492 the Spanish Inquisition forced Jews to convert, leave or be tortured. The book, Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean, by her brother, Ed Kritzler, traces the lives of those who under the guise of New Christians, fled to the Caribbean. Through alliances with pirates and privateers, they engaged in battles both in the Caribbean and in the Mediterranean. Ships bearing names such as the Prophet Samuel, Queen Esther, and Shield of Abraham, attacked and plundered the Spanish fleet while forming alliances with other European powers to ensure the safety of Jews living in hiding.
