Silversmith Sari Srulovitch discusses her practice and journey in Judaic art, including the design and creation of the Judaic Art Gallery’s first complete Torah ensemble. “I am constantly moved as I add my own modern, creative interpretations to symbols that are long imbued with rich historical meaning. As I work with silver and other metals, I draw on both old and new methods and highly disciplined process, meshing them with my own emotions and internal world.” Following her presentation, NCMA curator emeritus John Coffey moderates a discussion with Srulovitch, NC-based textile artist Neal Howard, and conservator Ruth Cox. They'll discuss their collaboration in creating three custom Torah mantles to complete the Torah ensemble.
The Kanof Lecture was established to promote a range of perspectives on art and religion. It honors the memory of Drs. Abram and Frances Pascher Kanof, two of the Museum’s most devoted patrons. Dr. Abram Kanof was the founder and first curator of the Museum’s Judaic Art Gallery. The lecture is made possible by the gift of the Kanof family through the Kanof Lecture Fund.
