"A Tar Heel in the Knesset: Making sense of Israel’s tumultuous parliament with Alon Tal"

As the seventh American citizen (and the first North Carolinian!) to serve in Israel’s Knesset, seeing Israel’s complex and colorful legislative and government decision making up close was sometimes uplifting, sometimes appalling and always fascinating. Based on dozens of idiosyncratic and often humorous anecdotes, this talk describes lesser-known aspects of the rough and tumble of Israeli politics, through the eyes of an academic who with little warning had to learn how to promote key issues like environmental protection, religious pluralism and gender equality.

About our speaker: Professor Alon Tal: Former Knesset member, Tel Aviv University researcher and veteran Israeli environmental activist is conducting a speaking tour. Professor Tal founded the Israel Union for Environmental Defense, Israel's leading green advocacy organization and the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, a regional center for Arabs and Israelis. Between 2021 and 2022 he served as a member of Knesset in Israel, chairing the parliamentary subcommittee for Environment, Climate & Health. Haaretz newspaper selected him as the country's most effective environmental leader and Israel's Ministry of Environment gave him a life achievement award at age 48. He is a 1980 graduate of UNC Chapel Hill.
