Program Description: John Coffey NC Museum of Art curator emeritus
"Holocaust Stolen Art & the NC Museum of Art”
Like many American museums, the NC Museum of Art has had to address the issue of Nazi-looted works of art. The issue has profound legal, philosophical and moral dimensions. This talk will present several case studies involving works in the Museum’s collection. Each case is a singular story with its own unique resolution.
John Coffey is the NC Museum of Art curator emeritus for both the Judaic collection of Jewish ceremonial art and the American and Modern Art Collections. During his career at the NCMA John served as the statewide director of the Israel/North Carolina Cultural Exchange. In addition, John served as a professor of art at UNC Chapel Hill for twelve years.
