Statement on New LGBTQ Non-Discrimination Ordinances

The Jewish Federation of Raleigh-Cary applauds the Wake County Board of Commissioners and Raleigh City Council on the passing their LGBTQ non-discrimination ordinances.

These ordinances, which passed unanimously, protect both people who live in the area and visitors from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and natural hairstyle, specifically in the workplace and in public areas, such as restaurants and stores. Any employer or business that violates the ordinance would face mediation and, if necessary, mandatory changes.

According to Cornell’s Center for the Study of Inequality, anti-LGBTQ discrimination increases the risks of poor mental and physical health for LGBTQ people, including depression, anxiety, suicidality, PTSD, substance use and cardiovascular disease. In the spirit of the Jewish value of preserving life, we support these non-discrimination ordinances as an important step in supporting the health and well-being of the LGBTQ community. We once again commend the Wake County Board of Commissioners and the Raleigh City Council for this action.
