Statement on Shooting at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Jewish Federation of Greater Raleigh sends our support to all University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill students, faculty, staff and families after the tragic shooting that happened yesterday on campus. We are saddened and angered as we mourn the loss of Professor Zijie Yan.

Many families in the Greater Raleigh Jewish community have children who attend UNC as students and family members who work there as faculty members and staff. All of them deserve a safe place to live, learn, and work.

Jewish Federation leadership has been in touch with the North Carolina Hillel to offer our support to students and staff during this difficult time. The North Carolina Hillel building will be open all day for students who need comfort and a safe space.

Students and parents seeking support are encouraged to call the Carolina Counseling and Psychological Services phoneline: 919-966-3658. Students can also visit in person for an urgent need without an appointment Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additionally, students can text the word START to the Crisis Text Line at 741-741 for additional assistance.

Parents and families in Raleigh who seek support during this time are encouraged to contact Jewish Family Services at 919-676-2295 or jfs@shalomraleigh.org. Our social work team is here to support you.
