“Ottoman Sephardi Jews in the US South presented by Mimi Brown.

In 1906, Ralph Nace Cohen arrived in Montgomery, Alabama from the Island of Rhodes, a small island off the coast of what is now Turkey, then the Ottoman Empire. This talk will cover the history of those like Cohen who made Atlanta, Georgia and Montgomery, Alabama their home in the early twentieth century, as well as a general history of Sephardi Jews in the US South. 

About the presenter: Mimi Brown is a Jewish Studies graduate student at Vanderbilt University. She is an aspiring historian and will begin her studies towards a PhD in history in Fall 2021. Her research interests are American Jewish history and the modern Sephardi diaspora. Mimi is from Charlotte, NC where she lives with her fiancé and cat, Gravy.
