Care Award 2023: Sid & Rachel Strauss
At this year’s Annual Gathering, we held our inaugural Volunteer Awards. These awards will be given to volunteers who have best exemplified our Federation’s mission to provide care, connection, and community to the Greater Raleigh area. Our inaugural Care Award went to Sid & Rachel Strauss.
The Strauss’ legacy of Volunteerism first began over thirty years ago, when Sid first served on the Jewish Family Services Board. Together, Rachel and Sid helped lead Shabbat, Chanukah, Passover, and High Holiday services at senior independent living facilities for over 20 years. They regularly participate in the JFS Food Delivery program, provide senior rides, and volunteer on Good Deeds and Senior Fair Days. Sid and Rachel were instrumental in helping our Volunteer Engagement Manager, Tracy Jacobson, re-launch the Jewish Family Services Volunteer Program in 2009. According to Tracy, they were supportive and went beyond the call of duty to make this program the success it is today.
The Strauss’ volunteerism goes beyond that of Federation. Rachel is a spokesperson and resource in the field of Dementia, working with individuals and families in need. She an active leader in Hadassah and spearheaded the annual gift wrap program for many years. Other organizations Sid and Rachel work with are the NC Museum of Art, Hospice, Beth Meyer Synagogue, Dix Park, Wake Co. Board of Elections, NC School for the Blind and the Boys and Girls Club.
Thank you to the Strausses for all you have done to care for our community!
