The SHALOM Act Passes the NC Senate

Final vote on an amendment to the bill in the North Carolina House.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Raleigh applauds the passage of the SHALOM Act in the North Carolina Senate. After a quick vote on an amendment in the House last night, the bill will now go to Governor Cooper to be signed into law.

By passing the SHALOM Act, North Carolina will adopt the IHRA working definition of antisemitism, providing guidance to local governmental bodies, educational institutions, and law enforcement agencies on identifying and responding to antisemitic incidents.

The strong bipartisan vote in both the house and in the Senate demonstrates how North Carolina leaders want to push back against antisemitism and hate.

This has been a group effort. We want to thank the volunteers and professional staff of the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte, Greensboro Jewish Federation, Jewish For Good, Hadassah, Voice4Israel and many other Jewish organizations for working together towards this goal.

We want to thank Harry Kaplan and Mark Goldhaber for using their knowledge and relationships to help us navigate governmental processes and keeping us updated on the bill’s progress.

Finally, we want to take the opportunity to thank YOU, each and every community member who called or emailed their elected officials in the North Carolina Legislature to ask them to support this bill. They heard you loud and clear at the NC State Capitol.

When we work together, we make Jewish Raleigh greater.

Please take the opportunity to thank your senator for voting for the SHALOM Act. You can find your senator’s contact information at this link.
